Lincoln Park

Attended a tour of Lincoln Park (which focused on the old Lincoln Park Cemetery
At one time North Avenue was concidered to be so far north, that the city would never extent so far
And because it was low quality swampy land, it could be a good cemetery
(moving graves from water tower cemetery, McCormick Pland and the south side POW camp and a cemetery)
This caused problems on occasions when the lake rose, flooding the cemetery, sometimes disturbing and exposing graves
Cholera (and the increasing value of this property) required that graves be moved
Funds and Manpower were dedicated to this task, which was interrupted by the Chicago Fire which burned through the cemetery up to what is now Fullerton
Gravestones some “Charred” were moved, these are still visible in some cemeteries
But he moving was pre-empted by redirection of priority re-bulding after the fire
The story given was that most if not many bodies still remain under the ground
-bones are unearthly reguarly whenever there is new construction, such as the LPZ Farm in the Zoo, the Parking Lot recently added at North and Clark (formerly an Indian Trail- along with other of Chicago’s Diagonal Streets) called Green Bay Trail
There is a hidden-truths plaque at the baseball field with proposes that 1,500 potter’s graves and confederate prisoners of war still remain under the baseball field
This happens frequently for new construction from
(the question that remains is if most of the bodies remain in this area, then what happened to the Cholera issue – why was that no longer an issue?
